Aziza is what brings Mariam and Laila together. She is the light of both of their lives. Neither of them have easy lives, and she is what brings them joy. Her innocence and youth give them a great deal of hope.
For Mariam, Aziza provides the unconditional love that she has never before received. Aziza accepts what she sees and only looks for love and to be loved in return. In a way, she is the last untainted force in their lives. Her emotions are pure and uncomplicated.
For Laila, Aziza is her last connection to her former life, and to Tariq. She holds onto her for dear life because for Laila, Aziza is her last bit of home.
In this scene,
I like how you recognize that Aziza is representative of a lot more than just a child. I agree that she is kind of a metaphor for Laila's past life.
