Rasheed is symbolic of male dominance. Even before the introduction of the Taliban, Rasheed has always believed and followed its strict Islamic beliefs, primarily regarding women. He always made Mariam and Laila wear burqas when out in public, and expected a level of respect and care from them that he never reciprocated.
It is no wonder that Laila is seeing the men around Kabul as Rasheed, because they have freedom to travel and exist on their own. The men have a level of freedom now completely unattainable Laila and Mariam.
To Laila and Mariam, Rasheed is linked to oppression, they led free lives before they married him.
