Aziza can sense unrest in the setting around her, making her tense, this is why she is described as clutching her doll, and looking wide-eyed. While she is still very young, she can sense that something in her environment is different. The introduction of the Taliban regime has Laila and Mariam very unsettled and Aziza can easily pick up on their change in disposition and intonation.
